Welcome to South Padre Island!
There’s an island in Texas? That is what many people ask when it
comes to the topic of South Padre Island. Perhaps that is a good
thing. Now is the time to look into South Padre Island for
family vacations, quick getaways even the option of owning
property. With today’s economy, people still need to take a
break. Why not look into one of the most affordable beachfront
destinations in the US today
South Padre Island is the southernmost tip of the world's
longest barrier island. It's two miles offshore of South Texas,
connected to the mainland by the Queen Isabella Causeway, and
only 30 minutes from Matamoros, Mexico. Its convention center
has spectacular views of the Laguna Madre Bay. Two major
airports offer service to the area: Brownsville/South Padre
Island International Airport and the Valley International
Airport in Harlingen. One-third of the island's available rooms
are condo units. Tourism is the only native industry, so
everything on the island is geared to serving group travel,
whether leisure or business
GETTING TO SOUTH PADRE ISLAND-
is as easy as can be. If you are coming in by car from upstate,
you can come in on Highway 77 (for Central and East Texas) or
you can come in on Highway 83 if you are coming in from West
Texas. Both those highways merge in Harlingen, TX and continue
south on 77. Turn left on Highway 100 (the
South Padre Island exit) and continue on Highway 100 through the
cities of Los Fresnos (watch your speed), Laguna Vista, and Port
Isabel. Highway 100 becomes a bridge, or causeway,
that ends on the beautiful, tropical South Padre Island.
