The two-mile long Queen Isabella Causeway, located in southern Cameron County, Texas is the only road connecting South Padre Island, Texas to the mainland. The Causeway was opened in 974 and replaced the previous bridge which had also been named Queen Isabella Causeway. A central section of the original causeway has been removed and it has been renamed the Queen Isabella State Fishing Pier. The Causeway is the 2nd longest bridge in Texas, stretching 2.37 miles (3.81 km) across the Laguna Madre

Beach Patrol & Safety
South Padre Island Fire Department Beach Patrol was started as a pilot program in July of 2008. Its goal is to monitor beach activities and to provide rescue services as needed on the City's Beaches. The long narrow beaches of SPI  "mobile patrol" was envisioned in order to cover all of the City's beach area.  they also provide minor first aid for jelly fish stings, scrapes, and cuts, etc. The Beach Patrol members act as ambassadors for the City by providing information to our visitors.
